How we Pick & Test our Guitars

For me, a regular-sized guitar is just fine so I had to take the help of some peers for this test, people who have larger hands or fat fingers. A simple search on the internet will give you tonnes of lookalike lists about wide neck guitars, many constructed of cheap & non-durable materials. So, my criteria while creating this list were:

  • Guitars with nut width wider than 1.68”
  • Has a good string spacing, a wider fretboard
  • Slightly larger body for better playability
  • Affordable guitars by popular brands
  • Available on renowned marketplaces with a good return policy

During the test, I would ask them to play a song from start to finish and see if they would make a mistake, and ask them the reason for it. I would note down if it was because of low space between the frets or string.

These 11 guitars felt the most comfortable to them and I ranked them according to their individual pros and cons.

Small disclaimer: I can bet my money on these guitar sounding great but I also recommend going down to a local music shop and testing it out yourself because guitars aren’t one-size-fits-all, you might find out a guitar that fits your body-type perfectly.

Is it easier to play a wide-neck guitar with small fingers?

If you have long fingers, wider neck guitars are easier to play. If you have small hands, you’ll want to stick to a normal size guitar.

The same is true for those trying to play on a regular size neck with long fingers. There just isn’t enough space to easily form chords. Guitars with wide string spacing are suitable for everyone.

What features should your guitar have if you have fat fingers?

Here’s a good video I found on the topic of fat fingers. These are super handy tips that will make your guitar playing experience a little smoother. Do give it a watch!

If you have fat fingers, you should consider the following features before purchasing a guitar.

Neck Shape: A “C” or “U” next ship is ideal for wrapping your fingers around and comfortably playing the tunes.

Fingerboard:  A wide, flat fingerboard with a radius of more than 8 inches is decent for fat fingers.

Scale: If space between the frets is less then the scale will be shorter. Chubby fingers can go for short-scale guitars which are 25 inches or below.

String Spacing: The wider the strings are spaced, the less likely it is that you will hit the wrong strings. So, there should always be enough space between the strings.

In conclusion

The Epiphone Les Paul LP100 is exactly what you need if you’re searching for an affordable guitar with the iconic Les Paul appearance, feel, and sound.
Ibanez RGA42FM is the best pick in the list of ‘11 best wide neck electric guitars. Its curved top looks good and also provides a softer and more comfortable edge.
The Fender American Ultra Stratocaster should be a premium pick for everyone. It’s one of the most advanced guitar and bass series, and it’s created for players who want the highest level of precision, power, and sound.

Since every musician wants something different and is seeking the right musical partner to fulfill their demands, this list is compiled by evaluating many options based on a range of parameters. I have put this together because I want all of the readers to have the best options possible.

Keep Strumming…
